Fathers Day
The 3rd Sunday of June is Father’s Day and we are encouraged to honour our earthly fathers.
For some of us the word father brings to mind images of love, respect and acceptance and good times. Unfortunately, this is not the case for everyone; for others the word father can bring up thoughts of fear, rejection and alienation.
All of us have had an imperfect earthly father to some degree or other. Those of us who are fathers have all made mistakes.
As Christians God is our model of a father in the truest sense of the word. Our heavenly Father was willing to pay any price in order to save you. Romans 8:32 (NLT): Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? Our heavenly Father is always ready to meet your needs (Luke 11:11-13). Our heavenly Father is our comforter, protector and defender. He has made us His heirs and reserves a home for us in heaven. Romans 8:15–17 (NLT): So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. And since we are his children, we are his heirs; in fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.
With the difficult challenges we face in this world today it should be a real comfort to each one of us to understand what Galatians 4:6 tells us: And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.”
As followers of Jesus Christ, we have placed our faith in God and His Son Jesus Christ.
