Joy through Hope
It is often said that February is the month of the blues and without a doubt that is the experience of many people at this time of year for a variety of reasons, maybe because it is the heart of winter, maybe this year because of financial challenges related to the economy, maybe because of illness or loss of a loved one, or other personal reasons.
February is also the month we associate with love. In mid-February we celebrate Valentine’s Day to focus on those we love in a special way either through present celebrations or memories of the past. It is also an appropriate time to remember that all the various forms of love we experience are but faint reflections of God’s all-embracing and infinite Love that permeates creation, the Love that God gifted to us in Jesus.
That divine Love inspires Hope in us, hope which is an essential attitude for a healthy commitment to our Faith in God, in Jesus, and in the Holy Spirit. The saying Hope springs eternal is a familiar, beautiful, and inspiring reminder that Jesus is all about eternal hope. I am with you always, even to the end of this present age. (Matthew 28:20)
And so this month in particular and anytime we are in pain or sorrow or grief, or feel sadness or alone we should recall these simple words of Jesus: You may have sorrow now, but I will see you again and you will rejoice and no one will take your joy away. (John 16:22)
